Understanding the Life and Death of Moses

Moses and his life journey

Moses is a central figure in biblical history, renowned for leading the Israelites out of Egypt and receiving the Ten Commandments. His life and death have been subjects of deep interest and study. This article explores key aspects of Moses’ life, including where he was born, his age at the time of his death, and the period during which he passed away.

The Birthplace of Moses

Moses was born in Egypt, a fact recorded in the Book of Exodus. His birth took place during a challenging period for the Israelites, as they lived under Egyptian rule. During this time, Pharaoh decreed that all newborn Hebrew boys should be killed. To save him, Moses’ mother placed him in a basket and set him afloat on the Nile River. He was discovered by Pharaoh’s daughter, who adopted him and raised him as her own. As such, Moses grew up in the Egyptian royal household, surrounded by its culture and traditions.

The Age of Moses at His Death

Moses lived to be 120 years old, according to biblical sources, specifically in Deuteronomy 34:7. This remarkable lifespan allowed him to witness and lead significant events in the history of the Israelites, including their journey through the desert toward the Promised Land. Despite reaching such an advanced age, the text notes that Moses’ eyes were not dimmed, nor was his vigor diminished, suggesting he maintained his strength and clarity up to his death.

When Did Moses Die?

Moses died just before the Israelites were set to enter the Promised Land. His death occurred on Mount Nebo, located in the modern-day country of Jordan. The Bible specifies that it was in the land of Moab where Moses passed away, and God Himself is described as burying Moses in a valley, although the exact location of his grave is unknown. Moses’ death marked the end of an era for the Israelites and the beginning of a new chapter under the leadership of Joshua.
